Cush and I at the last minute decided to run the local Moonraker 10km, Urchfont, Wiltshire. At 5pm on Sunday 8th of July we started the race, having sought permission from the organisers allowing us to run with a dog. You must always ring before entering an event to ensure they allow dogs, as some races take place over private land or close to dog - unfriendly areas. Anyway it's wise advice as you wouldn't want to travel and then find that you couldn't compete.
We had a great deal of interest in what we were doing and as many runners run with their dogs away from the race scene and had never heard of canicrossing, so after swopping contact details we started our runs. I say runs as with the assitance of Takoda it would be inevitable that Cush was going to be running on ahead. We received geat encouragement from the local supporters as we passed through the village, and there was good support from the race marshalls, who did a great job of keeping us all on track. From the village we plodded along country lanes and tracks and eventually onto some nice trails in the woods before rejoining the roads back to the village. The village was still full of spectators at the finish and Cush and Takoda got a rapturous welcome home. I got the odd shout as I crossed the line a few mins later.
Cush finished 12th in the ladies event in a time of 48mins 49seconds
I finished in 57th in the mens event in a time of 50min 56Seconds
Takoda was the only dog in the event and then organisers were persueded to present Takoda with a finishers medal, Cush opted for a Moonrakers Biscuit.
Hopefully there may be a few more dogs next year, we will certainly be looking for any competition.
